UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO AEROSPACE TEAM -  ROCKETRY

Liquid Rocket Propulsion Co-Lead
(August 2020 - Present)

In August of 2020 I decided to join the UTAT Rocketry Team in hopes of increasing my design and teamwork skills in an aerospace related design team. Rockets have always been a subject of interest for me, and I am especially in awe of the Starship Project by Space X and their Raptor Engine design.

I originally joined UTAT Rocketry as an Aerodynamics and Recovery General Member before finding my place on the Liquid Propulsion and Structures sub-teams. I am focused on designing the first liquid rocket the team has ever built - Houbolt Jr.

On the Propulsion Team, I am focused on the Routing and Plumbing and Engine Design of the Liquid Rocket. Routing and Plumbing consists of the design of the PI&D, the design of a servo actuated isolation valve, determining the layout of the routing and plumbing in the rocket, and sourcing the parts. Engine design consists of the design of a Pintle Injector, Nozzle, and Combustion Chamber, and how they all will be mounted together. I am currently conducting bolt calculations for two engine mounting designs, in order to determine which would result in the lowest overall engine mass.

I joined the Structures team in the hopes of increasing my CAD and machining skills. I worked on the design of the Liquid Engine Test Stand using Solidworks to 3D model the test stand system. The test stand consists of an engine mount and two pressurization system stands, to hold the oxidizer and fuel tanks and routing and plumbing.

On June 14th 2021, I got chosen to continue as a Co-Lead on the Liquid Rocket Propulsion team! The team consists of five sub-teams that I am overseeing.  My focus as a lead is to encourage collaboration between members, to create a clear outline of the team's goals, to answer/ find answers to questions that arise, and to assist in the design work. My current tasks include running weekly update meetings, having one on one meetings with teams needing assistance, working on Engine mounting and Pintle design work, and attending UTIAS on weekends to assist in structures and propulsion testing and manufacturing.

I am extremely happy with my experience so far with UTAT Rocketry. I was very proud to have gotten an Honorable Mention at the UTAT Annual Showcase for the New Member Award. I find the Liquid Rocket very interesting, and am very excited to be apart of UTAT Rocketry history for for the design of the team's first Liquid Rocket!
